About this work
Crossing Snow Field, St. Moritz 1963
Below a snow-covered peak, a slope full of spruce drops steeply to a white valley. Across that valley a long line of small dark figures moves in a gentle curve, so small that you first take them for dots. At bottom right a single figure carries on alone along a track in the snow. Everything else is white, dark green and gray.
According to the caption, a line of sleighs crossed a snow field near St. Moritz, Switzerland, here in March 1963. The vertical format works in height: mountain, forest and snow stack up as three bands, and the people get only the lowest strip. So you first read the picture as a landscape and only then discover the procession. Look closer and you see how slight the journey is against the mountain behind it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
