About this work
Club Lunch, Beverly Hills 1952
Five men in suits sit on a green bench around a small table with a white tablecloth, a little vase of pink flowers and a bowl of cherries. They all laugh, most of them toward the man on the right, who gestures with his hand as if he has just delivered the punchline. Behind them a wooden trellis runs along a pink wall, with climbing plants growing through the sections.
Lunch in the Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel, 1952. From left to right: hotel manager Hernando Courtright, Johnny Meyers, baseball star Joe DiMaggio, Charles Morrison and the soul and blues singer Billy Daniels. Aarons seats them side by side on the bench, as in a line, but the laughter breaks that line open. Everyone turns toward the storyteller on the right, and so a group portrait takes the shape of a conversation.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
