About this work

Lily Safra, Villefranche-sur-Mer 1991

Lily Safra stands in the garden under a paper parasol on a bamboo handle, which she holds slanted over her shoulder. Her blonde hair is piled high, a double strand of large, irregular pearls hangs around her neck and pearls of the same shape sit at her ears. She wears a salmon-pink blouse and smiles with her mouth closed. Behind her a dark green hedge blurs.

In July 1991 Slim Aarons photographed Lily Safra, wife of the Lebanese-born banker Edmond Safra, at home in La Leopolda in Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Riviera. Aarons moves in close and lets the surroundings dissolve into blur. What remains is a play of pale tones: blond hair, pearls, pink fabric, the light paper of the parasol. Only the green background balances the whole.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
