About this work

Serge Obolensky, New York 1964

A tall man in a dark suit with a striped tie and a red flower in his buttonhole stands ramrod straight in the middle of an empty dining room, his hands clasped in front of him. Around him are tables with pink cloths, candlesticks with white candles and crystal chandeliers. In front, to his left and right, stand two silver coolers with champagne. The ceiling glows red.

Colonel Serge Obolensky in July 1964 at the St Regis Roof, the restaurant in New York that he created himself. Aarons photographs him as the owner of a set: frontal, in the middle, with the room symmetrical around him. The two champagne coolers in front work like a gate. Because not a single guest is seated, he is the only figure in a space furnished for a full house.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
