About this work

Galanos And Dovima, 1960

In a studio full of dress forms James Galanos sits on a wooden stool in a dark suit, his hands loosely clasped. Next to him Dovima poses in a long white lace dress with wide sleeves and long white gloves, one hand on her hip. On the workbench at left stand hat forms; white beams and fluorescent tubes run under the ceiling. At right half-finished dresses hang on the forms.

The American fashion designer James Galanos was photographed in his studio in 1960 with the supermodel Dovima. Slim Aarons simply leaves the workshop in the frame: scraps on the floor, fabrics on the bench, numbered dress forms. As a result the model does not stand on a stage but in the middle of the work that is still to be finished. The designer looks into the camera, she looks past it; the roles are clear at a glance.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
