About this work
New England Skiing, New Hampshire 1955
Two women stand in front of a wooden log cabin beneath a large sign reading Carroll Reed Ski Service Shop & Check Room. The one on the left, in a light sweater and ski pants, laughs and holds her skis upright beside her; the one on the right wears a dark coat, a white headscarf and sunglasses. More skis lean against the wall. Thin snow covers the ground.
Two skiers in front of the Carroll Reed Ski Service Shop and Check Room in New Hampshire, 1955. Aarons puts the sign at the top like a headline above the photograph, so the letters themselves tell you where you are. Below it everything is vertical: the logs of the wall, the windows, the skis and the two women between them. That repetition of upright lines gives the black-and-white picture its rhythm.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
