About this work
Boca Grande Friends, 1991
Three boys in white T-shirts sit in white wicker chairs on a veranda with a glossy dark floor. They are turned toward one another, in the middle of a conversation; the one on the right, in a cap and red shorts, holds a glass. Behind them rise tall white columns, with palm trees, a white parasol and a fence in the bright light.
Robert Wykoff, Graham Barrett and Barclay Lynch, from left to right, on the veranda of a house in Boca Grande, Florida, in March 1991. Aarons lets the columns take up almost the full height of the frame and puts the boys at the bottom, in a row of chairs as white as the house. The vertical format reinforces this: above, the house; below, three boys in sneakers who pay it no attention.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
