About this work
Caroline And Pet, Monte Carlo 1981
Princess Caroline sits on a wicker sofa with floral-print cushions, her elbow on the armrest and her hand in her hair. She wears a pink checked blouse, a golden-brown skirt and gold bracelets; an open book lies in her lap. To her left the dog lies stretched out on a cushion. Behind her stands a vase of orange and purple flowers in front of an arched window.
Slim Aarons photographed Princess Caroline of Monaco in August 1981 in Monte Carlo, with her dog Tiffany. The room is full: houseplants, flower arrangements, cushions, a teacup on the table, a border of large floral motifs along the window. Yet the picture does not turn into a still life, because she is the only one looking straight into the lens. Everything around her is decoration; her gaze makes it a portrait.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
