About this work
Hotel Camino Real, Puerto Vallarta 1979
From high above you look down on a kidney-shaped pool, deep blue inside a pale stone rim. Two swimmers float in the middle. On the right is a terrace full of round white tables and white chairs, where guests in swimwear sit talking. At the bottom edge the fronds of two palms reach into the frame and cover part of the water.
The pool belonged to the Hotel Camino Real in Puerto Vallarta, the resort town in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Slim Aarons photographed it in April 1979. He chose a viewpoint so high that the pool becomes a shape, a blue patch with a soft outline. The palm fronds in the foreground keep the picture grounded: they let you feel that you are standing somewhere among the trees, looking.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
