About this work
Snowmass Gathering, 1968
Two women stand at the front in the snow, sharp against a hard blue sky: on the left a green hat above a green and white jacket and cream trousers, on the right a canary yellow suit with a checked bucket hat and sunglasses. Behind them trestle tables under a blue and a red cloth are loaded with dishes, and a group in pale blue jackets helps itself.
Snowmass Village in Pitkin County, April 1968. Aarons places the two women so close to the camera that they nearly push the party behind them out of the frame, and lets colour do the separating: green and yellow in front, pale blue and red behind. It is not a skiing picture but an outdoor lunch on snow, with the ski boots still on.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
