About this work
North Conway, 1955
A fair-haired woman stands with a pair of wooden skis upright against her shoulder, in a white blouse with a scalloped collar, black trousers and red mittens. She looks off to the side, past the camera. Behind her a long timber structure climbs the snowy slope, hung with garlands; dark spruces stand at the top against a deep blue sky.
North Conway in New Hampshire, 1955. The skis are still wooden and the blouse belongs more to a terrace than to a piste — together they date the picture more precisely than the caption does. Aarons shoots upright and close, so the skis cut the frame from bottom to top and the slope behind serves only as scenery.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
