About this work
Parrot Jungle, 1955
A woman in a white sailor-collared blouse and red cropped trousers stands at the centre with two scarlet macaws on her head and shoulder. Three boys are around her: one on the left in a striped shirt with a macaw on his arm, one on the right with a blue and yellow bird on his shoulder, and a toddler at the front holding her hand. Palms behind.
Parrot Jungle near Miami, 1955. A family day out, and the birds do exactly what the park promises: they land on people. Aarons builds a pyramid out of it, with the mother as the central axis and the children stepping down to the sides. The colours help — red above, red in the trousers, and blue and yellow as a counterweight on the right.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
