About this work
Skier In Vermont, 1962
One skier walks from left to right along a packed track, in a yellow anorak and red trousers, skis over the shoulder and poles in hand. Behind him a high bank of snow climbs away, and above it stand spruces and bare larches plastered with snow against a deep blue sky. A single white cloud sits at the right.
Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont, March 1962. Aarons keeps the skier small and right at the bottom and gives the rest to the trees, which are so thickly iced that they read as coral rather than conifer. Yellow and red are the only warm colours in the frame, and both are on one figure who is nearly out of it again.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
