About this work
Deck Dwellers, 1967
Straight down onto the deck of a sailing yacht: the white deckhouse in the middle, teak side decks, and the churning wake on either side. A large white sail fills a third of the frame. A woman in a bikini lies on a cushion on the roof; a man reads lying down in a patterned shirt. A straw hat and a yellow towel lie about.
Off the coast of Exuma, April 1967, aboard the Traveler II. The picture was made from the mast, and that explains everything about the composition: no horizon, no sky, only deck and water. The ship is moving — the wake says so — while everyone on deck lies as though it were still. That difference between speed and rest is the subject.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
