About this work
Rowing Off Sicily, 1975
Seen from high above the coast: pale limestone boulders fill the left half, and below them the water is so clear that the bottom shows everywhere, dark with fields of weed. In the middle a white rowing boat drifts with two people aboard, oars out; at the lower left a second boat lies with two more beside a large boulder.
Near Taormina off the coast of Sicily, 1975. Aarons looks down almost vertically and leaves out the horizon, so there is no longer a top or a bottom — only stone and water running into one another. The two boats are there to give the scale; without them you would not know whether this is ten metres or a hundred.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
