About this work
Palace Hotel, 1989
Five people skate on the ice: on the left a man in red and a woman in turquoise, in the middle a pair turning together — she in pale blue, he in a white sweater — and on the right a woman in leopard print. In the foreground the spectators sit at little tables under pink cloths, in furs and coloured jackets, with glasses and a cooler.
The Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, 1989. This is the latest work in the group, and the jackets show it: hard blocks of colour that did not exist in the decades before. Aarons keeps the arrangement he had used for forty years — watchers at the front, action behind — so you look over shoulders first and only then see the ice.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
