About this work
Skiing In New Hampshire, North Conway circa 1955
Four skiers stand on a flat stretch of snow at the foot of the mountain, talking. On the left a man in a red cardigan and a black hat, beside him a woman in a gray sweater. On the right a young man in a sweater with a knitted pattern and a woman in a fur coat and red trousers. Behind them the run climbs straight up between the pines.
Slim Aarons photographed the skiers around 1955 at the Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire. The caption names no one. What carries the image is the relation between foreground and background: the four stand in one line, almost as on a stage, while the mountain with its bare run fills the whole upper half. The conversation is small, the landscape large, and the red of cardigan and trousers holds the row at both ends.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
