About this work

Lake Tahoe Ladies, 1959

Nine young women in swimsuits stand in a row against the railing of a pier, in white and black pumps. Red, yellow, white, striped and checked: every swimsuit is different, and so is every pose. Above them a light blue sky takes up more than half the picture. On the left, flags flutter on a mast; behind the railing lies the lake with mountains on the far side.

A group of young women in swimsuits on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, in 1959. Slim Aarons photographed them from low down, so the row rises above the horizon and the women stand tall and slender against the sky. The empty upper half is no waste: it gives the group room and turns the row into a frieze. You read the picture from left to right, swimsuit after swimsuit.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
