About this work
Florida Businessman, Palm Beach 1968
Peter Pulitzer leans his shoulder against a white column, ankles crossed, and laughs broadly at the camera. He wears a light pink shirt and light trousers with a brown belt, and holds a jacket over his shoulder. Behind him the veranda continues to an open door with an arched window, a hanging lamp and a large palm-like plant. The floor is brick.
In April 1968 citrus grower and restaurateur Peter Pulitzer posed on the patio of his home in Palm Beach, Florida; the photograph is associated with A Wonderful Time. Slim Aarons lets the column fill the left side of the frame, a vertical stripe of white beside the man in pastel. His pose is relaxed, but the picture is tightly built: column, figure and view each get a third of the frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
