About this work

Polo Prince, Cowdray Park 1985

Prince Charles looks down with a smile at a small white box in his hands. He wears a dark blue polo shirt with a light blue sash and the print les diables bleus, white trousers and a black belt. Beside him Diana leans toward the box, in a white blouse with black spots. Behind the rope in the background, children look on.

August 1985, Cowdray Park in Sussex: Charles, Prince of Wales, had just played polo for Les Diables Bleus, and Diana, Princess of Wales, stood beside him. Aarons moves in close and cuts away everything that suggests a ceremony. What remains is one gesture, two heads bending over the same box. The crowd behind the rope stays out of focus, and that makes the moment feel private, in the middle of a field full of people.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
