About this work

Nina Dyer, 1958

Nina Dyer stands in tall grass beside a stream, a fishing rod and a landing net in one hand and the other hand in her pocket. She wears a pink striped blouse, a dark skirt with a wide belt and a small black hat. At her feet sits a white spaniel with its tongue out. Behind her are a wooden barn and wooded hills.

Model Nina Dyer, wife of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, was photographed in September 1958 ready to go fishing. She stands upright and serious, straight into the lens, as for a formal portrait, with rod and net at hand. Beside her the spaniel sits panting. The two attitudes side by side, the woman composed and the dog exuberant, give the image its lightness.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
