About this work

Marisa Berenson, Capri 1968

Marisa Berenson sits at a laid table, chin on her hand, looking past the camera to the side. Her hair is tucked away under a purple turban that matches the purple swimsuit with silver rings. In front of her stand glasses of a pale drink and a bread roll. On the left the profile of a man slides out of focus into the frame, on the right a green hat.

The American actress Marisa Berenson was photographed in Capri in 1968. Aarons puts the sharpness in one place. The man in front and the guests behind her dissolve into patches of color, so that only her face stays clear, together with the purple of turban and swimsuit. She looks not at the lens but at something outside the frame, and that sideways glance makes you start looking for what she sees.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
