About this work
Hotel Olden, Gstaad 1961
People with skis over their shoulders cross the wet street in front of a white hotel with green shutters, a painted facade and a balcony with flags. On the terrace in front, guests sit at tables in the sun. On the left a Volkswagen Beetle and other cars stand along the curb, with a shop sign reading Sport beyond them. Some snow still lies on the roofs.
Skiers carried their skis past Hotel Olden in Gstaad in 1961. Slim Aarons photographed the street with everything happening at once: parked cars, walkers, a parking sign, guests on the terrace. The painted facade sets the tone, but the diagonals of the skis set the picture in motion. They jut upward like arrows and give the quiet street a direction.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
