About this work
Faithful Couple, Ireland 1968
Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger stand close together in front of a large portrait in a gilded frame. She wears a black fringed shawl over a white dress and holds his arm; he wears a black coat with a white jabot at the neck. Behind them hangs dark wallpaper with a diamond pattern, and a red sofa stands there. The painted couple above them almost vanishes into the dark.
In August 1968 the singer Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones stood in front of a portrait in Castletown Mansion in Ireland. Slim Aarons placed the living couple beneath the painted one, so that old and new meet. With his jabot, Jagger looks as if he has stepped straight out of the frame; Faithfull looks into the lens with a small smile. The play between the dark canvas and the two light faces below carries the picture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
