About this work

La Barranca, 1971

From above: at the bottom the edge of a pool where a woman in a red bikini climbs out, above it two loungers with guests, one in a red shirt. Beyond them a clay tennis court with players and a thatched hut, then roofs, palms and the bay with two white high-rise hotels. Mountains close the horizon.

La Barranca, Warren Avis' villa in Acapulco, January 1971, with the bandleader Teddy Stauffer as a guest. Aarons stacks everything the house offers into one upright frame: the pool, the terrace, the tennis court, and only then the city and the bay. It is an inventory of the place, from near to far, with the red bikini as the first step.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
