About this work
Crowded Kitzbühel, 1980
Seen from above, a crowd of skiers stands packed shoulder to shoulder, skis and poles carried over the shoulder. Red, blue and white everywhere: quilted jackets, woollen hats, sunglasses. There is no snow in sight and no slope — only heads and skis to the edge of the frame. A child in a green hat stands near the middle.
Kitzbühel, 1980. Aarons photographs skiing here without a mountain: the camera is high, the landscape is cropped away entirely and only the crush is left. The picture becomes a pattern of jackets, with the slanting skis as the only lines in it. Of all the winter frames in the group this is the one where the snow is missing altogether, and the one where nobody has room to move.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
