About this work
Portrait Sitting, 1970
A drawing room panelled in bleached wood. At the centre a woman with white hair pinned up stands in black velvet and a full dark skirt with a red sash, beside a carved gilt bench. A zebra skin lies on the floor. On the right the painter is at his canvas with a palette, and on that canvas she already stands: same pose, same skirt.
Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, 1970. Diana 'Dysie' Davie, wife of T Bedford Davie, is sitting for the painter John Orr. Aarons frames it so that model and portrait come in one look, with the whole room between them: leopard cushions, a wisteria panel, a folding screen. The painting is nearly finished and shows her more severely than the photograph, which leaves all the clutter in.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
