About this work

Lido Life, 1957

Seen from straight above, four young people lie on a small orange inflatable dinghy in dark green water. At the top a woman in a patterned bikini, in the middle a fair-haired man without a shirt, arms around the others, below him a woman in orange. At the bottom a fourth is climbing aboard from a dark pontoon. Feet trail in the water.

The Venice Lido, 1957. The dinghy is plainly too small for four, and that is the whole subject: everyone fits as long as nobody moves. Aarons hangs vertically above it, which turns the water into an even green plane and makes the orange jump out. With no horizon and no beach the only question left is who goes in first.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
