About this work
Armando's Beach Club, Acapulco 1975
White loungers with towels in yellow, blue and white stand around a blue pool. On the front one a woman in a straw hat and pink bikini lies in the sun. On the left stand two women, one in a green-and-yellow bikini, the other with an orange printed wrap around her. Behind the water rises a white pavilion with keyhole-shaped arches, under a sky streaked with cloud.
Sunbathers at Armando's Beach Club in Acapulco, Mexico, in February 1975. Slim Aarons held the camera level, so the joints in the tiles and the row of loungers lead to the pavilion. The white arches and the pattern on the towels echo each other, and the swimwear seems matched to them. People and architecture belong together naturally, as if the club had been arranged for this one picture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
