About this work
Prince Filippo Corsini, Florence 1983
Prince Filippo Corsini sits on a chair in the middle of the gravel path, in a camel-colored suit with a red bow tie and a walking stick in his right hand. Beside him stands a gray-brown hunting dog, and at his feet sits a pug. Marble statues on pedestals flank the path, lavender blooms along the edges, and at the back the palazzo opens in three arches.
Prince Filippo Corsini was photographed in 1983 in the gardens of the Palazzo Corsini sul Prato in Florence. Slim Aarons placed him exactly on the axis of the garden, between two statues that stand like guards on either side. That symmetry suits the place, but the dogs take the solemnity out of it: one looks aside, the other sits there a little lost. So a stately portrait turns homey after all.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
