About this work
Vourekas-Petalas Family, 1978
A mother and three daughters sit on a large marble block lying on the ground, with Greek letters chiseled into it. The mother, in a blue checked blouse, leans on her hand; the girls in pink and white dresses sit side by side, the girl on the right half reclining with bare feet. Behind them stands a temple with columns against a white sky, with fragments of columns around it.
Alexandra Vourekas-Petalas, wife of the Greek architect Andreas Vourekas-Petalas, with their daughters Isabella, Tatiana and Atalanda, in June 1978. Aarons places the family low in the frame, on a stone that itself belongs to the ruin, and lets the temple above fill the rest. The backlight makes the temple pale and flat, almost a backdrop, while the family in front stays sharp and close. Old and young share one image.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
