About this work
Curacao Children, 1979
Three children sit side by side on a low wall in front of a pink facade whose paint is peeling in patches. The smallest child, in red overalls, holds a hand to its mouth. The other two have their arms folded, and the boy on the right laughs broadly. Above them hangs a yellow shutter in a brown frame, and cracks run through the wall beneath their feet.
Three local children on a low wall, in Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles, in January 1979. Aarons photographs the wall straight on, so there is hardly any depth and everything lies on one plane: the pink, the yellow shutter, the row of children. The facade almost becomes a painting. The fact that the shutter hangs above the children on the right rather than in the middle keeps the composition moving.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
