About this work

Jim Kimberly, 1956

Seen from behind and to one side, a grey-haired man sits at the red wheel of a dark convertible with red leather seats. He wears a grey checked jacket and looks away to the left, smiling. Behind him a woman with short dark hair sits up on the seat back, in a white top and a salmon cardigan. Large banana leaves beyond.

The Beverly Hills Hotel, 1956, with Jim Kimberly and Kim Wadsworth in the car. Aarons stands behind them rather than in front, so you look over their shoulders and the car fills the lower part. Both are looking the same way, at something outside the frame, which gives the whole thing the character of a departure: they are nearly gone.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
