About this work

Darryl In Cannes, 1957

Darryl Zanuck stands on a wooden jetty above clear green water, in a gray jacket that hangs open over his bare chest and light blue trousers. He holds a cigar in one hand and a folder under his arm. Behind him lies a beach of white parasols and, beyond it, a white hotel palace among palms. To the right, two wooden motorboats bob.

The American film producer Darryl Zanuck was photographed in Cannes in 1957. Slim Aarons placed him at the front of the jetty, slightly off center, so the planks run into the picture as a diagonal toward the beach. Zanuck squints against the sun and stands calmly, while behind him the whole beach is in motion. The bustle of the bathers makes his calm visible.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
