About this work
Palm Beach Shoppers, 1968
Two women seen from behind sit on tall yellow chairs at a shop counter: on the left one in a yellow sleeveless dress, on the right one in a flowered jacket and a straw hat. Under the chairs a white poodle stands. Inside stand a woman in green and a man in a yellow shirt; above the counter hangs a sign with the name Lilly Pulitzer.
The Lilly Pulitzer boutique on Via Mizner in Palm Beach, 1968. Aarons photographs the customers from behind, so you see what they see: the shop, the fabrics, the staff. The poodle stands by as a third customer and looks the other way. Yellow is no accident here — the chairs, the dress, the shirt inside — it is the colour of the brand.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
