About this work
Sunbathing In Venice, 1954
A woman lies on her back on a bed covered with a blue and a pink towel, hands folded on her chest. Her face is completely hidden under a tall orange straw hat with two round white-rimmed lenses set into it. Behind her the sand, a wooden pier hung with flags, and a grey-blue sea.
The beach at Venice, 1954. The hat is the whole idea: a sun hat with sunglasses built in, so the face is doubly covered and still looks back at you. Aarons lies down low in front of it, at the eye level of the lounger, which makes the hat larger than the pier behind. A seaside joke, made with the care of a portrait.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
