About this work
Peggy Guggenheim, 1978
On the left a large painting of two grey figures at a turquoise sea with a small sailing boat hangs on a white wall. Beneath it a small bronze of thin figures on a base stands on a glass table. On the right, in a black doorway, stands a woman with white hair in a flowered pink and orange kaftan, leaning on a tall white form.
Palazzo Venier dei Leoni in Venice, September 1978. Peggy Guggenheim stands in her own collection; on the left hangs Picasso's On the Beach, so the caption says. Aarons gives the painting more room than the collector and sets her in a dark opening beside it, small and brightly coloured. The kaftan joins in as the only thing that is not grey, white or turquoise.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
