About this work
Newport, Rhode Island, 1965
From the air: a green headland with rocky edges runs out into the bay, a small white lighthouse on its tip at the lower left. On the headland a large shingled house, a few parked cars and walkers as dots. On the water dozens of sailing boats. Across the bay, in the haze, the town and more land beyond.
Newport, 1965, from above. Aarons keeps the camera far from the ground and makes one overview of the place he photographed so often: the shore, the houses on the point, the boats on the bay. Nobody can be recognised, only their traces — paths, roofs, sails. The lighthouse is small and white and holds down the lower left corner.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
