About this work
Minnie Cushing, 1965
A young woman with long dark hair wades through white surf in a short black wetsuit, a long pale surfboard under her arm. She looks to the left, away from the camera, and smiles. The water foams around her knees. Far behind her lies the beach, and right at the back someone else stands in the waves.
September 1965. Minnie Cushing, society girl according to the caption, carries her board into the water. Aarons frames on the waves and leaves the shore a thin stripe, so the board becomes the longest line in the picture. The black of the suit is the only dark thing among all that white and blue. The caption names no place; the sea has to say it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
