About this work
Villa Vera, 1968
A bar at the edge of the pool, in low evening light: in front chrome blenders and mixers, bottles and fruit on the counter. Around it guests sit in swimwear, a man with a necklace in the middle, a woman with short hair beside him. Behind them a woman in a blue bikini stands on the edge of the pool, and further off the sea in haze.
The bar of the Villa Vera Hotel Spa and Racquet Club in Acapulco, January 1968. Aarons sets the camera at bar height, so the bottles and blenders are the foreground and the guests behind. The light comes from the side and picks out only the edges. The catalogue already holds a second Villa Vera work; this is the only one at the bar.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
