About this work
Culinary Heights, 1987
On a mountainside a long table has been built of snow and loaded: bread, cheeses, lobster, fish, vegetables, champagne. Three chefs in white jackets and tall hats sit at it — on the left one with a glass, in the middle one on the snow with his legs crossed, on the right one with cutlery in hand.
Courchevel, April 1987. Jean Jacob of Le Bateau Ivre, Michel Rochedy of Le Chabichou and Albert Parveaux of Pralong 2000 set out their kitchen in the snow. Aarons places the table on the slope like an altar and the chefs beside it like three statues. A second picture of the same arrangement exists, framed wider; here the table stands larger in the frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
