About this work

View From Il Pellicano, 1991

From high above the water: a bay shading from green by the rocks to deep blue, with motor boats scattered across it, a schooner and a lone swimmer. Bottom right a terrace on the rocks with red and blue parasols, loungers and a small platform with a diving board. On the right the rocky coast runs out of the frame.

The sea off Porto Ercole, July 1991, seen from Hotel Il Pellicano. Aarons gives the water two thirds of the frame and sets the terrace small in the corner, so the parasols lie on the rock like confetti. It is one of his last works in the group — 1991 — and the construction is that of forty years earlier: high viewpoint, plenty of water, people as dots.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
