About this work
Via Mizner, Palm Beach, 1964
A narrow shopping street of white fronts thick with bougainvillea and striped awnings. At the front left stands a woman in a yellow printed dress and a pink hat; on the right a fair-haired woman in a white top and white shorts with a small boy in blue, and between them a man in a white polo shirt crouches. Above the street a balcony under a roof of red tiles.
Via Mizner in Palm Beach, 1964. The woman on the left wears a Lilly Pulitzer dress, the caption says, and that is the reason for the picture: the brand in the wild, outside the shoot, in the middle of shopping. Aarons frames upright to take in the bougainvillea, which turns the top of the picture pink. The man in the middle crouches and joins the two sides.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
