About this work
Spinnaker Sailing, 1973
A pale blue spinnaker bellies high above the water, and from its lower corner hangs a person, both hands on the sail, metres above the sea. Below lies the yacht, white, with the crew on the foredeck looking up. At the back a rocky islet, a hazy coast of hills and a single small boat. The sky is pale blue.
Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, August 1973. Somebody has let the spinnaker lift them, and Aarons sets the camera low so the sail dominates the frame and the figure beneath it turns small and black, like a dot on a balloon. The yacht at the bottom gives the scale. It is one of the few pictures in the group in which somebody does something dangerous.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
