About this work
Il San Pietro Di Positano, 1984
Straight down onto a hotel built against a cliff: terraces in layers, a small blue pool with loungers, tiled floors, and everywhere bougainvillea and greenery spilling over the edges. At the bottom a large terrace with tables and yellow chairs where a few guests sit. At the top cars parked along the road.
Il San Pietro di Positano on the Amalfi coast, August 1984. Aarons chooses the height at which a hotel becomes a map: every layer a terrace, every terrace another colour. The pool is the only straight shape and so draws the eye. The guests are dots on the lowest terrace. A second picture of the same hotel goes into the kitchen.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
