About this work
Il Canille, Capri 1980
A white-painted terrace hangs between the rocks high above a deep blue sea. Sunbathers lie scattered on loungers and cushions among pots full of hydrangeas and geraniums; at the balustrade a woman in a patterned dress looks out over the water, where the rock stacks of Capri rise. A small boat draws a thin white trail.
Il Canille, the villa of Italian tailor and costume designer Umberto Tirelli, built into the rocks of Pizzolungo on Capri — August 1980. Aarons photographs from above, so terrace and sea become one plane: white with flowers against dark blue. The woman at the balustrade does what the viewer does, and precisely through her you fall into the picture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
