About this work
MINAMIUONUMA, JAPAN - JANUARY 30: A map displaying ski and cable car routes stands at the bottom of a ski slope that has had to be closed because of a lack of snow, on January 30, 2020 in Minamiuonuma, Japan. Large parts of Japan are dealing with the warmest winter since records began, causing a lack of snow in areas that are usually blanketed. Some regions have seen only a fraction of the snowfall they would normally expect, forcing the closure of ski resorts and worrying local businesses. The Japan Meteorological Agency has laid the blame on westerly winds blowing across northern Japan and blocking a cold air mass from moving south and bringing more snow. Experts also also cited global warming as a factor by turning greater quantities of snowfall into rain than would have been the case in the past.
