About this work

Gondolas, circa 1955

A row of gondolas lies moored at wooden poles slanting out of the water, the black prows with their serrated irons to the front, the seats covered with canvas. In the middle a gondolier in a striped shirt and straw hat stands upright in his boat and looks across the water, where churches and a dome lie in haze. Black and white.

The traditional means of transport in Venice, the gondola, circa 1955, the caption says; the picture comes from Nocella via Three Lions. The photographer stands low on the quay, so the poles stand through the frame like a wood and the gondolier alone stays upright between them. The dome across the water is not named. Third Venice work in the catalogue.
